A few years ago we stumbled upon an Instagram account that was pure gold hiding in plain sight. This account was @rightbymyhouse and we instantly became hooked. There was something so funny and interesting about such a mundane concept that everyone found so funny, compelling and dear to them that they just had to shout it from the tops of stair sets everywhere — “that skate spot is right by my house!” We recently made a point to jot down some questions in order to get some answers! Here is our interview with @rightbymyhouse. Enjoy!
Who is @rightbymyhouse ?
A Human Being with an ego.
Who’s house has the sickest spot next to it?
A personal favorite from August 2017 -
James Craig: “But in 2008, so there was this one rail. It’s uh by my house and it’s um it’s literally a minute drive from where I live right now. It’s this long like 12.. or 10, something like that, but each stair’s like you know, a foot and a half. I went to High School by it, I went to Junior High right by it and I looked at this thing for fucking 15..17 years.. I don’t even know…forever.”
Chris Roberts: “You never went and skated it? Ever…?”
James Craig: “Well it’s a school..and there’s a gate.”
If you could be right next to a skaters house who’s would it be and why?
I think you’ve confused the point. It’s not about being next to a person’s house, it’s about the house being next to a person. With that said, any person will do because they’d all be next to my house and that’s what is important.
If you had to classify your account would you call yourself a public service account or a meme account?
I guess the phrase “Right by my house” could be classified as a meme in a way, but the account itself is more selfish geographical reference.
What made you want to start your account back in 2016? You’ve been running for some time now!
It’s kind of like when you buy a new car. You never really payed attention to how many of that particular make and model were on the road until you started driving it around. All of a sudden they’re everywhere. I guess it was an interesting aspect of human psychology presented to me in an obscure way. Once it relates to you, your home, your school, your Mom’s friend’s sisters farm..it’s important to you and therefore you should share that information to those it doesn’t relate to. Everyone is the center of their own universe. The irony of it all is it’s an anecdote only one person can appreciate.
How did you initially find all these comments?
I didn’t find them, they found me. Like I said, it’s like Pandora’s Box, once it’s released into the world it cannot be unseen. My DM’s are filled.
If you had a dollar for every post someone made about a spot being right by their house how rich do you think you would be?
If that were the case, I could probably buy every house near all the spots.
Has anyone said “that’s right by my house” just to be featured?
Of course, all the time. That’s where the “meme” aspect comes out. When people understand they’re doing it, they can’t say it seriously anymore without catching themselves in the act. At that point they just @ the account.
What’s next for you?
Once niche account at a time.
